Battle Analysis

In real life, saltwater crocodiles and Nile crocodiles share territory with hippos, and the relationship is clear: crocodiles avoid adult hippos. A full-grown hippo is one of the few animals that a large crocodile won't even attempt to attack.

The hippo's jaws are the key weapon โ€” opening nearly 180 degrees with 1,800 PSI bite force through foot-long canines. A hippo can literally bite a crocodile in half, and has been documented doing so. The crocodile's own impressive bite (3,700 PSI) is designed for clamping and death-rolling, but the hippo's two-inch-thick hide makes getting a useful grip extremely difficult.

The crocodile's only real strategy is ambush โ€” drag the hippo underwater and drown it. But hippos are semi-aquatic animals that can hold their breath for five minutes and are completely comfortable fighting in water. The ambush approach that works on wildebeest and zebra simply doesn't work on an animal that lives in the water.

The Case for Saltwater Crocodile

The saltwater crocodile has the strongest bite force of any living animal (3,700 PSI) and the death roll is uniquely devastating โ€” it can dismember prey by spinning violently while clamped on. If the croc can get a grip on a leg or soft area, it could theoretically drag even a hippo into deep water and use its superior aquatic maneuverability.

The Case for Hippopotamus

The hippo outweighs the crocodile by 1,000-2,000 pounds and has a bite that can sever a croc in half. Its hide is natural armor that resists the crocodile's teeth. Hippos are aquatic fighters perfectly adapted to the water where crocodiles dominate other prey. In real life, crocodiles actively avoid adult hippos โ€” nature has already answered this question.

Final Verdict

The hippo wins decisively. Its size, armor-like hide, devastating bite, and aquatic comfort completely negate the crocodile's advantages. Nature provides the best evidence: crocodiles share habitat with hippos and have learned to give them a very wide berth.
