This is about as close as animal matchups get. Both are ursids with similar fighting styles, similar weaponry, and similar temperaments. The deciding factor comes down to size — and the polar bear has a substantial advantage there, weighing 900-1,500 pounds versus the grizzly's 400-900 pounds.

In the wild, these two species do occasionally encounter each other in overlapping Arctic territories, and the results are... inconclusive. Both tend to avoid each other. But when forced into confrontation, the polar bear's larger frame gives it more leverage in the standing grapple that bear fights typically devolve into.

The grizzly has one potential advantage: aggression. Grizzlies are arguably more temperamental and more accustomed to fighting diverse threats. Polar bears primarily hunt seals and rarely encounter anything that fights back. A grizzly's experience with defensive moose, wolves, and other grizzlies gives it more varied combat experience.
